Most of us take souvenirs when on vacation but one U.S. traveler has had an attack of conscience years after removing some stones from the ancient Acropolis trail in Athens.
Having pocketed the stones years ago during a trip, the anonymous tourist returned the handful of small pebbles in a package recently posted to the Greek National Tourism Organization (EOT) office in New York.
A note inside the package read:
“I am sorry. I took them from a trail on the Acropolis many years ago. Please return them.”
Greta Kamateros, the EOT official who opened the package, said she was in tears when she read the note and found the lost stones.
She uploaded a photo to her Facebook page with a promise that she will hand them over to the Greek consulate for their long trip home.
