President of the Hellenic Republic Katerina Sakellaropoulou paid a visit to the National Archaeological Museum on Tuesday, ANA reports.
She was given a tour of an exhibit on the anniversary of the Greek Revolution in 1821 by Greek Culture Minister Lina Mendoni.
“For these, we fought: Antiquities and the Greek Revolution” at the museum juxtaposes Greek antiquities with 18th and 19th-century works, as part of events celebrating the bicentennial of the Greek War of Independence. It is named after a quote of General Ioannis Makrygiannis, a leading historical figure who admonished Greek fighters not to sell or give away any of the antiquities in Greece (“because it’s for these we fought the war”), as he notes in his memoir.
