Prime Minister: Greek island of Corfu is a unique living monument of culture

The Villa Rossa was Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis’ first stop while visiting the island of Corfu on Wednesday, ANA reports.

The contract for its remodeling and use as a cultural center was signed in the summer of 2022 with a budget of 4.8 million euros, with 80% of its financing from European funds and 20% from national funds. Mitsotakis was guided through the interior and exterior spaces, informed about the progress of the work and the possibilities of utilizing the historic building, which was erected in 1864, the same year as the Ionian Islands joined Greece.

The prime minister’s next stop was the Archaeological Museum of Corfu, where Culture Minister Lina Mendoni presented the management plan for the two fortresses of the island.

“Corfu is a unique living monument of culture and at the same time has the privilege of being designated as a world heritage center by Unesco since 2007. I am glad that today we have a very thorough study for showcasing and protecting the two monuments.”
