New paths towards development, resilience, and extroversion are expected to be opened by the infrastructure projects that will be implemented for the municipalities of Pyrgos, Ilida, and Ancient Olympia through the “Western Greece 2021-2027” Program. As emphasized by the regional governor Nektarios Farmakis, the above program will implement over 70 projects with a budget of 20 million euros that will change the development trajectory of the above municipalities, with what this entails for their tourist identity.
The new Spatial Investment, which was approved, includes projects that can improve the image of the Municipalities, such as the regeneration of the historical center in Pyrgos, regeneration and modern infrastructure in transportation in Ancient Olympia, upgrading of the Amaliada indoor gym, etc.
It also includes important cultural projects such as the regeneration of the riverbank area of the Kladeos River and the promotion of the Ancient Gymnasium of Olympia, the upgrading of the theater, and the archaeological site of Elis.
It also includes actions to strengthen the “treasures” of the Ilian land, such as the creation of a local brand for all local agri-food products.
The Operational Program “WESTERN GREECE 2021-2027” has a total Public Expenditure budget of 628.5 million euros. € and total EU support of €534.2 million and has the following strategic objectives to address the development challenges and priorities of the Region of Western Greece:
- Improving competitiveness in production, strengthening entrepreneurship in terms of innovation, extroversion, and digital support
- Protecting the natural environment, addressing and adapting to climate change, and strengthening energy self-sufficiency and the circular economy
- Enhancing mobility in the Region
- Enhancing social cohesion in the Region
- Enhancing sustainable local development through integrated interventions
