The Mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, welcomed yesterday the Navy trireme “Olympias”, the only faithful functional replica of the Athenian trireme of the 5th century BC, the Governor of “AVEROF”, Admiral HM Vasilios Asimakopoulos, and the Lieutenant Commander HM of the trireme, Emmanuel Zorba.
The arrival of the trireme, which sailed for the 11th year in Pasalimani, at the height of Alexandra Square, to celebrate the “Sea Days 2025” events, is one of the top events of this year’s festive program, highlighting the deep maritime identity of the city and its connection with its centuries-old history, culture and sea.
The trireme was welcomed by: the Deputy Mayor for Outreach, European Programs, and Tourism Andriana Zarakeli, the Municipal Volunteering Advisor Elina Verykaki, on behalf of the Sea Days Organizing Committee Panagiotis Kyrimis, volunteers, and members of Piraeus Team Up, and the advisor to the Mayor, Vasilis Christou.
The Navy band also participated in the reception of the trireme, playing favorite melodies of the Greek maritime tradition.
The Mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, in a statement, emphasized:
“With great joy and honor, we welcomed for the eleventh year in Piraeus the historic trireme “Olympias”, the only functional copy of the Athenian trireme of the 5th century BC. Its imposing presence, in the context of the celebration of the Sea Days 2025, is now an institution for our city, connecting our naval past with the present and the future.
“Olympias” is a symbol of our seafaring history and culture. It offers the people of Piraeus, visitors, tourists, and especially young people the opportunity to see our ancient maritime heritage up close and feel the power of the sea that shaped the identity of Piraeus.
I would like to warmly thank the Chief of the General Staff of the Navy, Vice Admiral Dimitris Katara, the Governor of Averof Vasilios Asimakopoulos, the Lieutenant Commander of the trireme Emmanuel Zorba, as well as all those who contributed to the participation of the trireme in the great celebration-institution for our city.
At the end, the Mayor of Piraeus, Yiannis Moralis, and the Governor of “AVEROF”, Admiral HM Vasilios Asimakopoulos, exchanged commemorative gifts.
Organization: Ministry of National Defense, General Staff of the Navy.
