With a positive impression and strengthened relations, the delegation of the Municipality of Western Lesvos returned from Pergamon in Asia Minor, participating in the major cultural festival organized by the homonymous Municipality of Turkey in the previous days. The delegation was led by the Deputy Mayor for Tourism, Aphrodite Vati, in the context of the close bonds of friendship that have developed between the two regions in recent times.
The delegation was also attended by the Municipal Councilor Vasilis Titirekis, municipal administration officials, the Director of the Kalloni Lyceum, along with a group of teachers, as well as dancers from the Traditional Dance Association “O Molyvos”. The latter impressed the audience by dancing in traditional costumes at the official opening of the festival, in the central square of Pergamon, along with corresponding groups from other Balkan countries.
A special moment of the presence in Pergamon was the meeting of the Greek delegation with the Mayor of the German city of Stadt Böblingen, Stefan Belz, who maintains a sister city relationship with Pergamon. On the sidelines of the meeting, they exchanged views on local government issues, while a symbolic exchange of gifts also took place.
The delegation also had an official meeting with the Mayor of Pergamon, Tansu Çelik, as part of the continuation of the contacts that began last September by the Deputy Mayor for Culture, Zacharo Joaquim. Meanwhile, Mrs. Vati conveyed an official invitation from the Mayor of West Lesvos, Taxiarchis Verros, to his Turkish counterpart to visit the island in August, during the Sardine Festival.
The two sides discussed the possibilities of further cooperation, with an emphasis on cultural and sports exchanges, strengthening good neighborly relations, and opening up prospects for inter-municipal synergies.
