A call for the salvation of Papoura, an emblematic historical and natural monument in the heart of Crete, is addressed by citizens and organizations through a resolution hosted on the Avaaz platform, having already collected thousands of signatures of support.

Papoura, an imposing hill 700 meters high near the village of Agia Varvara in Heraklion, is a unique geological formation, with indications of archaeological importance. According to local testimonies and scientific evidence, at its top, there are traces of ancient human activity, which gives the landscape historical and cultural depth.

However, this point is reportedly threatened by the construction of facilities, possibly for military or technical use, which, according to residents and environmental organizations, may irreparably alter the natural and cultural character of the hill. According to reports, the installation of radars for the new airport in Kastelli is reportedly planned there, and this has outraged the local community and beyond.

The citizens supporting the resolution are demanding:

the official recognition of Papoura as a protected monument,
the immediate suspension of any activity that may threaten its integrity,
the full archaeological and scientific documentation of the area with transparency.
As the resolution points out, Papoura is not only an impressive natural landmark. It represents the historical memory of the area and is linked to the local identity, which cannot be ignored or sidelined in the name of “unconditional development.”
