The Decision to Incorporate the “Firefighting at the Archaeological Site of Knossos” project into the “Crete” 2021-2027 Program was signed by the Governor of Crete, Stavros Arnaoutakis.
It has a total budget of 1,141,525 euros, is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund and concerns the expansion and upgrading of the firefighting system at the archaeological site of Knossos.
The project is being implemented by the Directorate for Studies and Execution of Museums and Cultural Buildings Projects of the Ministry of Culture and Sports, in collaboration with the Ephorate of Antiquities of Heraklion.
Its aim is to strengthen the fire protection of the important monument, with modern equipment and infrastructure, adapted to the needs arising from the climate crisis.
The Archaeological Site of Knossos is essentially strengthened with a modern and integrated fire protection system, which will contribute to the prevention and immediate response to risks to the emblematic Minoan Palace and its natural environment.
The project is part of the Integrated Spatial Investment (ISI) of the Minoan Palatial Centers of Crete. Its implementation takes on greater importance, as it follows the unanimous decision of the 47th UNESCO Conference, by which the Minoan palaces were officially included in the World Heritage Sites, gaining their rightful place on the global cultural map.
