«Culture – Nature – People»: Crete Region’s Innovative Strategy Presented at UNESCO 80th Anniversary Event

The Region of Crete made a dynamic and substantial contribution to the anniversary event celebrating 80 years of UNESCO, held in Thessaloniki. Crete was the only Greek region invited to participate and present its strategic initiatives, following the inclusion of the Minoan Palace Centers on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

The Region of Crete was represented by Deputy Regional Governor for Culture and Equality, Gogo Milaki, and the Region’s Special Advisor, Dimitris Michelogiannis. During the Culture sector session, they presented the “Culture – Nature – People” plan, highlighting the innovative integration of UNESCO listings with Crete’s regional development tools.

Key Elements of the Plan

The presentation focused on the Integrated Spatial Investment (OSI) for “Emblematic Routes”, a €25 million program from the “CRETE” 2021-2027 program, which connects:

  • “Culture Route”: Linking the six Minoan Palace Centers – Knossos, Phaistos, Malia, Zakros, Zominthos, and Kydonia.
  • “Nature Route”: Connecting the four UNESCO sites of the island – Psiloritis and Sitia Geoparks, Samaria and Asterousia Biosphere Reserves – with the European hiking path E4.

Special emphasis was given to Crete’s designation as “European Region of Gastronomy 2026”, highlighting the link between agri-food traditions, sustainability, and cultural identity.

Statements from Gogo Milaki

Deputy Regional Governor Milaki stated:

“This invitation is international recognition of Crete Region’s pioneering cultural policy, which treats world heritage not as a static title but as an active tool for sustainable development, social cohesion, and international outreach. On UNESCO’s 80th anniversary, we are more prepared than ever to showcase our region’s identity globally. We leverage UNESCO’s tools to hand over to future generations a Crete that respects its history while confidently looking to the future.”

International Cooperation

On the sidelines of the event, the Crete delegation met with Greece’s Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Georgios Koumoutsakos, to discuss the promotion of Minoan Palaces and strengthening Crete’s presence in UNESCO’s international networks.

This initiative demonstrates Crete’s commitment to integrating cultural heritage with sustainable regional development, creating a model where history, environment, and society reinforce each other.
