Travel receipts in the country increased by 17.7% in May 2025 compared to the corresponding month in 2024, despite the 2.7% decrease recorded in the same month in the arrivals of non-resident travelers. According to data from the Balance of Payments of the Bank of Greece, May receipts reached 2.24 billion euros, compared to 1.9 billion euros in May 2024.
The reverse trend of arrivals in relation to the increase in receipts leads to the conclusion that visitors to Greece in May spent more per visit (increase in per capita spending).
In fact, the travel balance is the one that is mainly responsible for the increase in the surplus of the services balance in May, and to a lesser extent the balances of other services and transport.
At the same time, the data for the period January – May 2025 also point to a positive change in expenditure per traveler. The first 5 months of the year closed with a small increase in arrivals by 2.1%, but a stronger increase in receipts (+12.7%), with the latter amounting to 4.35 billion euros, compared to 3.8 billion euros in the corresponding 5 months of 2024.
In the same period, the surplus of the services balance declined, due to the deterioration of the transport balance, which was offset to a certain extent by the improvement of the travel balance.
