Greek Tourism: 16.7 billion in receipts in 8 months – Disappointing August for Germany, Italy, USA

Travel receipts in the country in the 8 months of January-August 2025 are 16.7 billion, up 12% or 1.78 billion compared to the corresponding 8 months of 2024. This increase is due to the 4.1% increase in incoming travel traffic, to 25.9 million travelers from 24.89 million last year – not including cruise volumes – and by 7.2% in average spending per trip.

In August, receipts increased by 10.5% to 4.52 billion compared to 4 billion in the corresponding month of 2024. The increase is due to an increase in inbound travel traffic by 8.1%, to 7.46 million travelers, and an increase in average spending per trip by 1.7%.

August: Explosive increase from the UK, decrease from other markets
The picture of receipts from major markets in August is mixed. Travel receipts from three major “superpowers” for Greek tourism, Germany, the USA and Italy, were down compared to last year. The only major Greek tourism market to show an increase, and an explosive one at that, was the UK market, from which the Bank of Greece’s data records a strong increase of around 40%, to 848.7 million euros.

The remaining markets are down. In particular,

  • – receipts from Germany decreased by 16.5% and amounted to 612.3 million euros
  • – receipts from Italy also showed a decrease of 8%, to 337.5 million euros
  • – receipts from the USA decreased by 3.1% and amounted to 205.3 million euros
  • – receipts from Russia increased to 4.9 million euros.

The UK market also plays a leading role in August travel traffic as it showed the largest increase among the major markets. Travel traffic from the UK amounted to 978.4 thousand travelers, an increase of 12.4% since August 2024.

Germany followed with an increase of 7.2% to approximately 1.1 million travelers, while the Italian market moved almost at last year’s levels with 555.3 thousand travelers, an increase of 0.4%, as well as the French market, with a decrease of 0.7% and 450.7 thousand travelers.

A decrease of 23.5% was recorded from the US market, with the total number of travelers amounting to 174.2 thousand for August 2025.

Finally, travel traffic from Russia increased to 4.1 thousand travelers.
