Chania: Technical University of Crete conference on European Wastewater Management Directive

A significant conference is being organized on Friday 24/10 in the morning at 10am at the conference room of the Mediterranean Architecture Center in the old port of Chania. The conference is entitled “Wastewater Management in the Era of the Revised Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive: The Need for Green Treatment Technologies and the Challenge of Micropollutants”

The conference is organized by the Laboratory of Environmental Technology and Management of the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering of the Technical University of Crete, headed by Asst. Prof. Alexandros Stefanakis. The event is funded by the Hellenic Foundation for Research & Innovation (ELIDEK) within the framework of the project “Development of an innovative Artificial Wetland design: a nature-based solution for the circular management of liquid waste”.

Professors and Researchers from various Universities and Institutions of our country have been invited to the conference, specifically:

Alexandros Stefanakis, Asst. Professor, School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete
Nikos Thomaidis, Professor in the Department of Chemistry, Assoc. President of the Board of Directors at the National Kapodistrian University of Athens
Athanassios Stasinakis, Professor at the Department of Environment, University of the Aegean
Stergios Vakalis, Assistant Professor at the Department of Chemical Engineering, National Technical University of Athens
Nikoletta Xanthopoulou, Head of the Water Treatment Plant Laboratory, EYATH
Michalis Fountoulakis, Associate Professor at the School of Chemical and Environmental Engineering, Technical University of Crete
Christina Kotsifaki, Consulting Chemical Engineer
Georgos Gourgouletis, Founder of the “Science Me” platform & PFAS Community
The conference focuses on the revised Wastewater Directive which changes the landscape of wastewater management, bringing new provisions but also challenges for decarbonization of treatment, reduction of the scope of application to settlements of over 1000 inhabitants, and the regular monitoring of micropollutants, which translate into investments in new green treatment and detection technologies.

In this context, the results of the project will be presented regarding the design and optimization of nature-based solutions and specifically Artificial Wetlands for decentralized wastewater treatment. It will be discussed how such green technologies can provide a solution to many of the provisions of the directive, but also the big issue and challenge of effective micropollutant management.
