Greece resumes immigrants deportations after a 5-day pause

A second group of migrants is being sent back from the Greek islands to Turkey after a five-day pause, under the agreement signed between EU and Turkey.

Today 150 immigrants will be sent back, while the initial list with the persons to be deported is getting smaller, since asylum applications recorded a significant increase.

Authorities now are looking for those who do not wish to apply for asylum or have withdrawn their asylum application.

Under the EU deal with Turkey, migrants who have arrived illegally in Greece after 20 March will be sent back to Turkey if they do not apply for asylum or if their claim is rejected.

Three demonstrators on Lesvos tried to block the ship carrying 45 Pakistani migrants, who were to be sent back to Turkey. They fell into the water and grabbed on to the anchor of the ship to prevent it from setting sail. The Coast Guard arrested the three activists who are facing charges of obstructing the transport.
