Employees in Greek public transportation said will strike over the weekend in protest to the omnibus bill tabled by the government that includes the prior actions required by Greece’s lenders to close the program review.
There will be no metro service in Athens on Saturday and Sunday, while the ISAP electric railway, buses and trolley buses will not be in operation on Sunday due to strikes by unionists.
Intercity trains and the Proastiakos suburban railway will not be affected by the protest action.
Workers at the Piraeus and Thessaloniki port authorities (OLP and OLTH) will also walk off the job over the weekend in protest at plans to privatize the two organizations.
With an updated announcement, tram and urban railway employees said they will join the metro employees in a 48-hour strike starting on Saturday morning instead of Sunday, while busses and trolleys will join the labour action on Sunday morning and end it on Monday morning, as initially announced.
Trains and suburban railway will operate normally as the Greek federation of railway employees said travellers have already bought tickets for the weekend.
On Sunday, striking transport employees will hold a rally on Syntagma square, at 17.00 (local). On Monday (May 23), the unions will convene anew to decide on their next moves.
