Greek port workers continue Piraeus and Thessaloniki strike for 29th day

The nationwide federation of port employees (OMYLE) has announced that it will carry on its strike at the port authorities of Piraeus (OLP) and Thessaloniki (OLTH) on Wednesday and Thursday.

The dockyard workers at OLP however decided to end their strike, which has caused a rift with OMYLE and their colleagues at OLTH. This rift emerged from the difference of opinion over a provision in the general personnel code which, according to the Minister of Shipping, will secure worker rights during the privatization of the ports.

The employees however argue that these provisions also allow the OLP’s board of directors to dismiss the code and replace it with its own, without any explicit references to collective negotiations or the administrative decision process that are already in place.
