2016 hunting season begins in Cyprus with woodpigeon, turtledove hunts

The 2016 Cyprus hunting season officially began today with hunters only allowed to shoot woodpigeons and turtledoves in authorized areas.

According to Charalambos Pittokopitis, President at the Cyprus Federation for Hunting and Wildlife Conservation, hunters registered this season are lower than last year, reported CNA English.

Around 15,000 hunters are expected to take part during the five Sunday’s allowed for hunting the birds.

KING OF HUNTING

When questioned by CNA English as to what hunters enjoy to hunt the most is, Pittokopitis stated that the “king for hunters is hunting partridge and hare”. 

Hunting for partridge and hare is expected to be allowed during November and December.

FORESTRY DEPARTMENT WARNINGS

Cyprus’ Forestry Department has urged hunters to be especially careful during their outings and avoid lighting fires and throwing cigarette ends and matches into the vegetation.

The Forestry Department has notified the Hunting Federation that the risks of a forest fire spreading is extremely high if these warnings are not adhered to, especially due to hot weather conditions.

If a smoke or fire is detected immediately call 1407 or 112 for the emergency services.
