Greek fire-fighters are battling a large blaze that broke out in northern Chios on Friday morning injuring six people, one of whom seriously.
Strong winds blowing in the area are continuously rekindling the flames which have created two large fronts: one between the villages of Sidirounta and Metohi and the other in the forested area of Apsiles.
Early in the morning, the fire reached the village of Sidirounta injuring three women who didn’t have time to evacuate. One of the injured suffered severe body burns and was airlifted to Athens while another was wounded in her leg. Those with lighter injuries were treated at the local hospital. Numerous houses have suffered damages.
Fire-fighting aircraft are focusing their efforts in controlling the blaze in Apsiles, to avoid its spread to a pine forest which has so far avoided destruction.
