The chairman of Olympiacos FC Evangelos Marinakis is considering resigning from his post, following the Appeals Prosecutor’s call for his referral and detention over his suspected involvement in a football corruption ring.
According to a report in Goal News the football club’s legal team fears the repercussions of the chairman’s referral. According to the Hellenic Football Federation’s regulations, should a team official be found to be implicated in a rigged match, then the team in question may have points deducted and heavy fines, as well as the possibility of relegation and trophies being removed.
Additionally, the Piraeus-based football club may also face penalties from UEFA, such as being excluded from European tournaments.
