Cyprus is set to have two different time zones in the early hours of Sunday morning, with the occupied areas not following daylight saving time, as the rest of the island.
CNA reported on Saturday that at 4:00 am on Sunday morning, clocks in Cyprus will be turned back an hour.
This summer, Turkey had announced that they would no longer be following daylight saving time, with the occupied areas quickly following suit.
After the decision of the so called ‘TRNC’ was announced in September, President Nicos Anastasiades had said that the time zone issue shows that the occupied areas are still largely influenced by Turkey.
“What is the message? One that they [the Turkish Cypriots] are under the influence of Turkey. Two, they believe that they are one with Turkey while we [Greek Cypriots] are making attempts with Turkish Cypriot leader, Mustafa Akinci, for the reunification of the island. That is why I say that the guarantees, despite arguments, will simply allow the guarantor power to influence and monitor the situation as it develops,” the President said.
