Cyprus firefighters battling Lofou blaze bring it 'under control'

Firefighters battling a large blaze in the mountainous village of Lofou, Limassol District, on Sunday evening managed to bring it under control, reported SigmaLive Greek.

Authorities were struggling to contain the fire, largely due to strong winds sweeping the area, but ultimately succeeded in controlling the blaze.

According to an official announcement from the Fire Service, 18 fire trucks have remained in the area in case any flare-ups occur.

On Monday morning firefighting aircraft are to explore the area and assess the damage.

SigmaLive Greek learnt that three hunters were rescued by firefighters after they were trapped in a gorge as the fire raged around them on Sunday.

Two of the three were rescued by local firefighters, while the third – who was taken to hospital with breathing problems – was rescued by a British Bases fireman.

A car belonging to a hunter was also destroyed.
