A North Aegean official asked Shipping Minister Panagiotis Kourmoumblis to implement a law that allows for the addition of an emergency ship to make the routes between the mainland and the islands of the northern Aegean during strikes.
The request from the prefect comes after an ongoing week-long strike of the Greek seamen’s federation which has disrupted supply routes to the islands and regular ferry services.
North Aegean prefect Christiana Kalogirou said the emergency ship is necessary “given the continuation of the strike by the seamen’s federation”, adding that the situation on the islands has been “very difficult”
