Cyprus authorities have issued a scam alert to warn Cypriots of fake charity scams related to Christmas.
Police are currently investigating criminal charges against the ‘Cyprus Institute of Affection and Love for Children.’
According to Phileleftheros newspaper the charity institute based in Larnaca has been allegedly pocketing the money meant for the charity. It has been reported that the charity circulates a magazine to collect donations which then go towards helping local children.
However, following a request from Greens MP Giorgos Perdikis and Interior Minister Socrates Hasikos, the charity is now facing criminal charges on a felony count of money laundering.
POLICE WARNING
Police have asked the public to be extremely careful about whom they donate to, and have warned those intending to make donations to be cautious. They suggest that the best way to avoid a bogus charity scam is to verify the organisation before donating.
Here some additional tips to avoid donations on fake charity scams:
- Do not feel pressured to give money or financial information over the phone.
- Beware of ‘sound-alike’ charities.
- Be cautious of social media requests for donations. Although some may be legitimate, consumers need to verify the organisation before making donations.
- Be extremely careful whom you invite into your home, as beggars usually work in pairs.
