Adverse weather conditions are preventing marine salvage crews from pumping out the fuel from the Antigua/Barbuda-flagged freighter “Cabrera” which run aground north of Andros Island on Christmas Eve and is leaking small quantities of oil, experts said on Tuesday.
Authorities have instead placed absorbent dams around the wreck to prevent the expansion of the oil spills while three tugboats are waiting at the site. The weather conditions have also prevented divers from seeing if the ship has any cracks on its hull.
“Cabrera”, built in 2007, carried 3.5 tons of ferronickel and about 70 tons of fuel and had nine foreign crew members, all of whom were rescued by a navy helicopter. It had sailed from Larymna, Greece, and was heading to Tornio, Finland.
