Asylum applications submitted to Greece’s asylum agency skyrocketed in November swelling by 593 percent compared with the monthly average in 2015, the agency said on Thursday.
According to the data, 7,625 requests were filed last November while in 2015 the agency received on average 1,100 requests every month. The largest jump is recorded in Thessaloniki (1,514.1 pct), Lesvos (824.1 pct) and Thrace (402.5 pct), while in the region of Attica the increase was much lower (62.3 pct).
Divided by sex, the requests submitted by women refugees in November jumped 932.7 pct and by unaccompanied minors 711.4 pct. Excluding December, the total number asylum requests submitted by men in 2016 reached 27,812, from women 16,563 and from unaccompanied minors 2,072.
The highest number of asylum requests was submitted in autumn, with 5.125 in September and 6,268 in October. Most of the applicants were Syrians (23,649), followed by Pakistanis (4,066), Iraqis (4,055) and Afghans (3,295). However, the largest increase in requests compared to 2015 came from those filed by Palestinians (1,800 pct), followed by Iraqis (1,500 pct), Algerians (1,372.7%) and Syrians (1,133.7 pct).
