The Director of the Water Development Department Andreas Manoli has expressed cautious optimism over the flow of water into Cyprus’ dams from recent rainfall.
In statements to CNA on Tuesday, Manoli said that the rain over the past two weeks has resulted in an increase of reserves by 21.6 per cent in the dams, which equates to 63,675,000 cubic metres of water.
At the same time last year, he noted, reserves came to 37.4 per cent, estimating that there is still a way to go until it can be said that reserves are at a satisfactory level.
On Tuesday, the dams which feed the southern water pipeline have reached 15.1 per cent while on the same day of 2016 they were at 25.6 per cent of full capacity.
Paphos dams have more satisfactory levels of capacity at 33.6 per cent, he acknowledged, adding however that at the same time last year they were at 61.8 per cent of capacity.
Manoli also said that a great deal of the rainfall was initially absorbed by the dry ground, adding that in the last three days a greater flow of water has started building up which is the source of his optimism that soon the dams will hold significant reserves.
Snow from the mountains of Troodos will also melt which will further enrich water reserves in the dams, he noted.
