Greek energy ministry urges consumers to avoid unnecessary power usage

Greek environment and energy ministry on Tuesday advised consumers to avoid unnecessary use of power during the hours of peak consumption, between 18:00 and midnight, as a precaution so as to ensure an adequate supply. Consumption of both electricity and natural gas has risen sharply during the recent cold weather, creating a supply shortage.

Authorities have already banned all exports of power and have prepared a plan for power cuts to large-scale consumers to avoid more serious problems.

Environment and Energy Minister George Stathakis on Tuesday called a meeting at the ministry to coordinate action for ensuring an uninterrupted supply of electrical power and gas to consumers as a cold front sweeps Greece and neighbouring countries.
