Greek farmers’ protests escalate with blockades of the national road to Athens

The mobilizations of the farmers are intensifying with blockades of the national road to Athens, and the decision of the farmers in Serres to move to the frontier post of Promachonas, on the border with Bulgaria, with their tractors. The farmers were prevented by strong police forces.

Main demands of the farmers are the immediate withdrawal of the forced recovery of debts of less than EUR 5,000 to the pension funds and an annual non-attachable 15,000 euro limit on bank passbooks of farmers and breeders.

For his part, Minister of Agricultural Development Mr. Evangelos Apostolou says he is open to dialogue, and announced a regulation that requires companies to pay the producers within two months for fresh and perishable products.
