Thousands of Zakynthos islanders came out in protest in the island’s main town on Wednesday morning, demonstrating against the ongoing failure to address a months-long waste disposal problem and the continued closure of operating theatres in Zakynthos hospital, which have not reopened since the death of a woman in December 2016.
Zakynthos shops also remained closed during the protest rally and a march held along the coast road ending at Solomos Square, reopening at 13:00.
The local authority has yet to find an alternative site to deposit the island’s refuse after the Skopos landfill was closed by locals in that area on the grounds that it was illegal.
