Swiss Justice Minister Simonetta Sommaruga visited Lesvos on Monday to be informed about the management of migration on the island, accompanied by Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Mouzalas and the Swiss Ambassador to Greece, Hans-Rudolf Hodel.
Sommaruga met with Lesvos mayor Spyros Galinos, who briefed her about the actions organized by the municipality, noting that “the general situation has improved markedly compared to last year.”
The ambassador asked about the impact on tourism on the island and the ways in which Switzerland can help support it.
“We may not belong to the European Union but be assured that in Brussels we are fighting for your views to be adopted and for Lesvos to be supported in practice. You must immediately receive the necessary financial support to meet the existing needs,” she told the mayor.
Sommaruga visited the reception and registration center in Moria and the municipal camp at Kara Tepe. According to what was made know, the Swiss government will fund the NGO Doctors of the World so they can continue offering their services to the centers and camps in Lesvos.
