Two passengers suffered slight injuries when the high-speed ferry “Seajet 2” collided with the pier as it was docking in Sifnos island harbour on Wednesday. One was slightly injured on the forehead and the second in the neck area. The remaining 194 passengers on the ferry disembarked safely.
The high-speed catamaran has suffered damage to the bow section of the right-hand hull and has been forbidden to set sail in order to complete its journey. The ship was travelling from Piraeus port to the Cyclades, with stops at the islands of Serifos, Sifnos, Milos, Folegandros, Santorini, Koufonisi, Naxos, Mykonos, Santorini, Folegandros, Milos, Sifnos, Serifos and back to Piraeus.
Arrangements to get the passengers bound for the other Cyclades islands to their destinations will be made by the ship owner. The company announced that it has reorganised its schedule for the next two days, replacing ‘Seajet 2’ on its runs with its sister-vessel, the “Superjet”. This will in turn be replaced by the passenger/car ferry “Paros Jet” on the Piraeus-Serifos-Sifnos-Milos-Folegandros-Santorini-Ios line, while the ‘Paros Jet’ passengers on the Rafina line will be served by the “Tera Jet”.
A coast guard announcement noted that the “Seajet 2” had a small breach of the hull just above the water line that did not pose a threat to the ship’s safety. It will remain in Sifnos and out of service until Friday so that the damage can be repaired, the ship owner ‘Seajets’ said.
The two injured passengers were taken to the island’s health centre for first aid and were later discharged.
