Laboratory tests performed on the coastal zone of Vari, Voula and Vouliagmeni show that the local beaches remain clean and the situation “stable”, municipal authorities said on Monday, in a follow-up on the pollution caused in southern Attica by the oil spill that leaked from a sunken tanker in Salamina more than a week ago.
“The beaches of our municipality remain clean, with the exception of the appearance in the area of Kavouri of small mazut agglomerates, which are solidified and are constantly being removed by municipal crews,” the municipality announced in a press release.
A representative of the company “Chemico Lab” which conducted the laboratory tests last Friday explained that the proportion of agglomerates in relation to the volume of water is such that they do not cause any measurable pollution.
In a meeting between the company that has undertaken the cleanup operation and the municipality, it was decided to move the anti-pollution barrier to a different spot due to an imminent change in the direction of local winds.
Checks were also carried out by the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), which abstracted water for an independent lab test. The results of the tests will be available in two days.
