Thirteen days after the oil spill caused by the tanker “Agia Zoni II”, the state of the coastline in Athens was visibly improved, the Hellinikon-Argyroupolis municipal authority governing one of Athens’ coastal suburbs stated on Sunday.
An announcement by the municipality mentioned that the results of a clean-up operation in the Saronic Gulf were already apparent on Hellinikon Beach, the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research (HCMR), Agios Alexandros Beach, the amateur fishing harbour and the coast along the Egyptioton Sailing Club.
Visiting the municipality’s seafront on Saturday, Deputy Shipping Minister Nektarios Santorinios as well as the head of the coast guard Rear Admiral Stamatis Raptis promised that the beaches will be fully restored, while arrangements were also made to supply the HCMR research tanks with clean water using a tug, so that they can resume operation.
