The Greek City of Thessaloniki has decided to name one of its squares after Melbourne, following an idea by Melbourne’s Thessaloniki Association, The White Tower.
According to a recent Neos Kosmos report, the Thessaloniki City Council under Mayor Yiannis Boutaris convened in August 2016, and discussed revamping and naming one of its squares after Thessaloniki’s sister city, Melbourne.
Neos Kosmos says that members of the White Tower Association, had approached the Thessaloniki mayor several times to discus the topic.
After much deliberation the City Council unanimously decided to name the park in Anagennisis Street, which is situated close to the port, “Melbourne Square”.
