The annual autumn meteor shower known as the Orionids will reach its peak between Friday night and dawn on Saturday morning in the whole northern hemisphere, including the country of Greece. Visibility for the phenomenon is expected to be high, given that there is a new moon and light cloud cover.
Orionids tend to be active every year in the month of October, from October 2 to November 7. At its peak, usually on October 20, up to 20 meteors are visible every hour. The ideal time to view the Orionids is just after midnight and right before dawn.
The Orionids is one of two meteor showers created by debris from Comet Halley and get their name because the meteors seem to emerge or radiate from the constellation Orion. Their “shooting stars” move very fast, reaching speeds up to 67 km per second, thus leaving a very visible trail in the sky.
