A working-holiday visa program which was intended to see hundreds of young Greeks travel and work in Australia has yet to begin, local media are reporting.
A memorandum of understanding between Canberra and Athens was to allow 500 Greek citizens between 18 and 31 years of age to stay and work in Australia for six or 12 months. A reciprocal deal for young Australians was also to be rolled out.
Nevertheless, Neos Kosmos reports receiving messages from readers claiming that when filing applications with the Australian authorities, they found Greece was still ineligible for the visa program.
The two permits – the Working Holiday visa (subclass 417 – six months) or the Work and Holiday visa (subclass 462 – 12 months) – had apparently been agreed in July 2017 after years of discussions.
Despite Greek Parliament ratifying the proposals, it seems young Greeks will have to wait.
Neo Kosmos reports Greek embassy officials still waiting for instructions on the “framework” of the specific program.
It is now reported that those interested in the visa should contact the Greek General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning & Youth (GGDVMNG) again in February.
