Minister: Police force of 200 officers to patrol center of Athens

A force of 200 police officers will be deployed to patrol the centre of Athens and intervene where needed to avoid incidents, Alternate Citizen Protection Minister Nikos Toskas said on Friday in an interview with private ANT1 TV, according to ANA.

Commenting on Athens mayor Giorgos Kaminis’ criticism over the damage caused on Ermou Street, he claimed that Kaminis should do the things required of him and avoid criticising others to cover own his inadequacy.

On his part, main opposition New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Thursday toured Ermou Street in central Athens, the city’s main shopping high street, and was briefed on the recent vandalism targeting the street’s shops.

During the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, an anti-establishment group broke the windows of 11 shops on central Ermou street in support of Costas Giagtzoglou, who is currently jailed on remand awaiting trial for sending a parcel bomb to former Greek Prime Minister Loukas Papademos.
