Work to restore historic Plaka Bridge underway in Greece this summer

As efforts to select a contractor enter the final phase, works to restore the historic Plaka bridge in northestern Greek Region of Epirus could be well underway by the summer, the infrastructure and transport ministry reported on Thursday. The ministry launched a tender for the project on April 18, inviting companies to submit offers for the 4,750,000-euro project, ANA reports.

Plaka Bridge was a single-arch stone bridge completed in 1866, on the borders of Arta and Ioannina prefectures. Its span was 40 metres (130 ft) across and 17.61 metres high, making it the longest single-arch stone bridge in Greece and the Balkans and the third longest single-arch stone bridge in Europe.
