Region of Ionian Islands Governor, Theodoros Galiatsatos sent the following letter to ABTA entitled “Corfu is changing its image. The garbage collection is proceeding fast” regarding latest developments on the island of Corfu:
“In the decongestion of the island from waste, the municipality of Corfu is proceeding fast with the aim of restoring the proper functioning of the city and solving the problem that has been created.
Since last Friday, the “fleet” of waste disposal trucks of the municipality of Corfu – in partnership with private contractors, are constantly working 24 hours a day, resulting to a collection of more than 500 tonnes of solid waste each day.

“Garbage collection has begun with very intense pace. We believe that in the next three to four days, the road network will be fully relieved by large waste sites, while the collection will be expanded directly to settlements which are already serviced by smaller vehicles. The complete restoration of the island will occur within ten days at the latest” says the mayor of Corfu, Costas Nikolouzos.
For its part, the Region of the Ionian Islands supervises the whole process of waste collection and the restoration of the rhythm of the everyday life of citizens, by carrying out continuous inspections regarding the protection against environmental pollution.
“Efforts are being stepped up, with visible results now on the island. The Region of the Ionian Islands takes all measures to implement the waste management plan, which will lead to a complete solution of the problem. At the same time with the Environmental Services of the Region of Ionian Islands, we conduct all the necessary controls to avoid environmental pollution ” said Theodoros Galiatsatos, Governor of the Region of Ionian Islands.”
