Disabled 14-year-old girl captures Greek hearts at Athens Marathon (video)

A wheelchair-bound 14-year old girl from Rethymno in Crete made her dream a reality by participating in the authentic Marathon race on Sunday, according to the following article by greekreporter.com.

Marianna Avgoustaki crossed the finishing line at the Panathinaikon Stadium of Athens standing up.

She was raised from her wheelchair by friends who had stayed next to her all 42 kilometers of the race (26 miles), just a few meters before the finishing line.

The crowd at the stadium burst into applause for young Marianna who, despite her exhaustion, smiled in pride for her achievement.

Greek social media users were full of praise for her will and determination to conclude the Marathon race.

More than 55,000 runners from 105 countries flooded Attica to compete along the historical 42km route and the 5km and 10km races, along with other races for children and people with special needs.
