The National Meteorological Service (EMY) on Monday forecast that a new cold front is expected to grip Greece as of Tuesday, bringing snow, gale-force northerly winds, storms and a significant drop in temperature, ANA reports.
In view of the bad weather, the General Secretariat for Civil Protection (GSCP) advised citizens to be particularly vigilant and take measures to protect themselves from weather-related dangers.
The new cold front will bring heavy rainfall to parts of Crete as well as the islands of the Aegean during Wednesday and Thursday.
The northern, central and eastern parts of the Greek mainland will see snowfall not only at high altitudes but even in the lowlands of Macedonia.
Temperatures are expected to drop sharply from Tuesday onward, starting with the northern parts of the country, where the thermometers will plummet to sub-zero temperatures. Widespread frost is expected across the nation in the early hours of Wednesday.
Gale- and near-gale-force winds of 8 Beaufort will blow in the Aegean Sea on Thursday, rising to 9-10 Beaufort locally.
Starting on Friday, the weather is expected to become much milder and sunny in most of the country, as the cold weather system finally moves eastward.
