At midnight, at the turn of the year, the European emergency number 112 became fully operational at the Fire brigade’s operations center, int.ert.gr reports.
In addition to calls for assistance that people could already make, the center will be able to send evacuation messages in emergency situations, as well as other instructions to protect the citizens.
In a serious emergency, smartphone owners will receive warning text messages on their cellphones, accompanied by a distinctive alarm sound.
Those who do not own a smartphone should call 112 or visit 112.gr, sign up and ask to receive notifications through SMS, email or voice call on a landline or mobile phone.
The 112 operates 24 hours a day and calls are free.
