Greece designates referral hospitals for potential coronavirus cases

Greek Health Minister Vassilis Kikilias on Tuesday designated medical centers across the country which will be tasked with functioning as referral hospitals which will have to deal with potential cases of the deadly coronavirus, according to greekreporter.com.

The decision was taken during a meeting the Minister organized with the Central Council of Health Districts of Greece (ΚΕΣΥΠΕ).

At the same time, the country presented its own action plan for the treatment of possible cases of coronavirus in the country.

The National Public Health Organization (EODY), which publishes and updates useful information on the situation on its website here, said in a tweet that it is in constant communication with the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control and the World Health Organization.

Special isolation chambers have been designated in facilities across Greece, and there is at least one Referral Hospital with a negative pressure chamber in each health district of the country.

The Greek facilities designated as referral hospitals include the following: In the First Health District, the facility is Sotiria Hospital in Athens; the alternative is Evangelismos Hospital, also in the Greek capital.

In the Second Health District, the facility is Atticon Hospital in Athens; its alternative is Thriaseio Hospital in Elefsina.

The Third and Fourth Health Districts have the AHEPA University hospital in Thessaloniki as their referral facility; alternative hospitals are the University Hospital of Alexandroupolis and Bodosakio Hospital in Ptolemais.

The Fifth Health District has the University Hospital of Larissa as its reference center; the alternative there is the University Hospital of Lamia.

The main referral hospital for the Sixth Health District is Panagia i Voitheia University Hospital in Patras; the alternative is the University Hospital of Ioannina.

In the Seventh Health District, the University hospital of Heraklion on Crete is the main facility while the alternative is Saint George Hospital in Chania.
