“Monday’s unpleasant events confirm the need to speed up asylum procedures, return those not entitled to asylum and operate closed and controlled migrant centers. It goes without saying that delinquent behaviors are not compatible with the asylum process,” government spokesperson Stelios Petsas said on Tuesday during a press briefing, ANA reports.
Petsas reiterated that the government places emphasis on the decongestion of the islands and the internationalization of the issue. “We are proceeding with the implementation of the new asylum law and we have started returns. In January 2020 we had 85 returns, compared with 391 returns throughout 2019,” he said, and added: “Our goal is to multiply them in order to reach 200 a week within three months.”
