The King and Queen of The Netherlands said they regret not following COVID-19 health measures on the hedonist island of Mykonos, which has become a hot spot for the Coronavirus because of defiance and wild partying.
King Willem-Alexander and his wife Queen Maxima apologized for failing to comply with social distancing rules after a photograph on social media showing the couple posing with an unnamed man, said to be the owner of a restaurant where they dined, according to Agence-France Presse (AFP.)
“A photo appeared in the media in which we kept too little distance. In the spontaneity of the moment, we did not pay attention,” the pair tweeted, the news agency reported.
“Of course, we should have done. Because on holiday too, respecting rules for coronavirus is essential for beating the virus,” they added about the photo showing the King, 53, holding a face mask in one hand and the other is around the Queen, 49, while the unnamed man also has an arm around her.
The Greek government is struggling to get people to comply with wearing masks and staying at least 1.5 meters (4.92 feet) apart, especially in restaurants and bars with Mykonos especially defiant and private villa parties for hundreds of people going on, seemingly unstoppable.
