Portugal’s position is that the EU’s external borders are a joint responsibility of all 27 member states of the Union, and the responsibility to guard them cannot rest solely on the shoulders of countries which for geographic reasons lie closer to the migration pressure points, Prime Minister Antonio Costa said on Friday at the joint press conference with visiting Greek PM Kyriakos Mitsotakis, ANA reports.
In terms of migration, he stressed, the Portuguese Coast Guard has operated in protecting external EU borders at Greece since 2014, and carried out operations in the context of Frontex, the EU’s border security agency, or for others.
