A year after Turkey sent 10,000 refugees and migrants to the border along the Evros River, Greece is speeding construction of a 27-kilometer (16.7 miles) long fence there in a bid to keep them out.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan bused them there and urged them to try to get across into Greece before they were repelled by riot police and army units as tension intensified.
The reconstruction and reinforcement of an existing fence have already been completed and work is underway on the new section, reported Kathimerini, adding that the New Democracy government won’t expand the capacity of a detention center there following opposition from area residents.
There will only be a minor increase “for quarantine reasons” so that it can accommodate 350 from 330 the report said as the government has gotten tougher in trying to keep out refugees and migrants from Turkey, who went there fleeing war and strife in their homelands, especially from Syria and also Afghanistan.
It’s been 14 months since the government said it wanted Greece wants to install a floating barrier in the Aegean Sea to deter migrants arriving at its islands’ shores through Turkey.
