After Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said he wouldn’t force health care workers to be vaccinated while urging everyone else to be inoculated against COVID-19, Greece’s Bioethics Committee is expected to make its recommendation on the issue.
The New Democracy government has been considering vaccinating healthcare professionals and nursing home employees as a way to reduce infections in hospitals and retirement homes.
The panel is expected to approve making the shots mandatory, said Kathimerini and workers who refuse anyway could be transferred to be isolated from the public or have their pay and career affected.
The ruling could lead to other public workers required to get inoculated as the government has been struggling to persuade doubters and to reach a 70 percent of the population benchmark needed to beat back the pandemic.
