Greece’s largest island, Crete, is struggling to deal with the resurging COVID-19 pandemic and dominant Delta Variant, with Rethymno becoming the third municipality, after Iraklio and Chania, to have a night curfew put in place.
It will be from 1-6 a.m. to Aug. 25 – unless extended – and will apply to all except for night workers and health emergencies, further cutting into tourism hopes for popular spots in Greece.
The New Democracy government hasn’t moved to require vaccinations for all, the requirement so far only for health care workers but not even for tourism workers, including on islands, while those who go there must be inoculated, have a negative PCR test, or proof they’ve recovered from the Coronavirus.
Authorities have also imposed a 24-hour ban on music at all entertainment venues, including bars and cafes, as has been done off and on other popular islands such as Mykonos and Santorini as well as others that have seen a spread of the virus also because so many people are ignoring health measures and not wearing masks or staying safe social distances, with reports of wild parties going on.
