Violent demonstrations and incidents in central Athens square of Syntagma

A protest taking place in Syntagma Square over the tragic rail crash in Tempi erupted into violence on Sunday, with clashes between police and protestors, ANA reports.

Unidentified individuals armed with petrol bombs attacked the police, who responded with the use of tear gas and flash-bang grenades.
According to a police update, after incidents starting at noon that spread to Panepistimou Street, Omonia Square, and Pireos Street, the situation has calmed down and some 300 people remain in front of the Hellenic Parliament but without there being any tension.

During the incidents, unidentified individuals set fire to machinery parked in front of the Propylaea in Panepistimiou street and damaged bus stops, falling back to Omonia Square where police again came under attack and used tear gas, while further clashes between police and protestors occurred on Pireos Street, on the corner with Sokratous Street.
