Adverse rainfall affecting areas in Northern Greece

Extremely heavy rainfall is afflicting areas in western Thessaloniki as well as the city center since the early hours on Saturday, Central Macedonia Region chief of civil protection Charalambos Stergiadis told Athens-Macedonia News Agency (ANA-MPA).

The adverse rainfall is affecting areas as far as Moudania in Chalkidiki, he added, where power cuts occurred, and the areas of Polichni, Toumba, and Diavata. The Fire Brigade has so far dealt with more than 300 emergency calls across northern Greece including Thessaloniki and Chalkidiki, relating to water pumping, tree cutting, and transporting people to safe areas. Several roads in the region have also flooded, shutting down traffic.

Meanwhile, the Mayor of Kastoria Giannis Korentzidis requested that his municipality be declared in a state of emergency, as torrential rain has caused extensive flooding and has also impacted agricultural production.
